Cardiovascular activities efficient in burning a significant amount of calories per unit of time help to promote weight loss. To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume, so expending the most per minute maximizes the weight loss efforts of your workouts.

Burning Calories

The machine that burns the most calories per unit of time is the treadmill, as long as you're jogging or running. According to MayoClinic.com, a 160-lb. person burns about 584 calories for every hour they jog at 5 miles per hour, and 986 calories for every hour they run at 8 miles per hour.

Walking on a treadmill, however, is not as effective. That same 160-lb. person would only burn about 277 calories when walking for an hour at 3.5 miles per hour.

Importance of Intensity

All exercise machines will be effective at burning calories as long as you work out at an appropriate intensity. You should be able to talk to someone nearby, but be too out of breath to hold a constant conversation.

Considerations

Consider choosing the exercise machine that you most enjoy. If you don't like working out on the treadmill, use the machine that you're more likely to be consistent with. According to MayoClinic.com, a 160-lb. person on the stair treadmill will burn about 657 calories per hour and 511 calories on a stationary rower.
