How to Troubleshoot a Power First Treadmill

Power First treadmills are manufactured overseas and offered globally as an inexpensive complement to Schwinn's more advanced models. The treadmills have standard features such as LCD display, speed control and running deck elevation. The running belt roller system and incline function are powered by electrical motors that range from 1.25 to 2.0 horsepower. Troubleshooting a Power First treadmill includes checking the running belt, electrical circuits and internal components. Identifying problems is not particularly complicated when following a step-by-step procedure.

Step 1

Insert the safety key into the control console. Straddle the running belt and turn on the treadmill. Proceed to the next step if the treadmill does not respond or the panel shows an error message. Select a speed and wait for the running belt to start. Move to the rear of the treadmill and observe the alignment of the running belt. Adjust the alignment by turning the adjustment bolts with a hex wrench.

Step 2

Unplug the electrical power cord. Use an Allen wrench to remove the bolts that hold the front roller cover in place at the head of the running belt. Remove the right and left side hub covers at the front of the treadmill. Rotate the front roller by hand and inspect the running belt for damages. Signs of wear on the side of the belt indicate improper alignment that can affect electrical components.

Step 3

Loosen the running belt adjustment bolts at the rear of the treadmill. Slide the belt off the front and read rollers. Install the new running belt by sliding it on the front and rear rollers.

Step 4

Insert the safety key into the console to activate the start switch. This is necessary to test the internal circuits. Locate the black and white leads on the treadmill motor. Trace these to the circuit board near the treadmill motor.

Step 5

Remove the black and white connectors from the terminal posts on the circuit board. Test the continuity of the motor by inserting the red and black pins from the meter into the ends of the black and white wires, respectively. If the meter does not show a reading the motor must be removed and tested.

Step 6

Remove the bolts that secure the motor to the treadmill. Lift the motor and locate the speed sensor that resides below the motor. Trace the wire lead from the sensor to the circuit board and check the continuity of the speed sensor wire. If the meter does not show continuity, the speed sensor must be removed and replaced.

Step 7

Install the new motor or speed sensor as needed and connect the wire leads to the proper terminal posts on the circuit board. Make sure any attachment bolts are tightened. Attach the motor cover and hub covers.

Step 8

Remove the safety key from the console. Plug the treadmill power cord into an electrical outlet. Straddle the running belt, insert the safety key and start the treadmill.
