The liver plays a vital role in the overall functioning of your body. It primarily helps to clean the blood, store energy in the form of sugar called glycogen and is produces the required digestive juice bile, according to KidsHealth. Eating healthy foods will not only benefit your overall health, but they can also heal and clean the liver.

Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

According to Bernard Jensen in his book "Foods That Heal," dark green leafy vegetables help to both heal and cleanse the liver. This is due to their inordinate amounts of chlorophyll, which help to remove accumulated toxins within the liver, while neutralizing any impurities to protect the organ. Jensen recommends eating specifically dandelion and mustard greens, as they are high in compounds conducive to liver health. The Center for Young Women's Health also notes the importance of dark green leafy vegetables as part of your overall diet, as they contain vitamins A, C, E and K, potassium, magnesium and fiber.

Horseradish

Horseradish can help in the digestion of fat to keep the liver healthy and stimulate digestive action, according to Myra Cameron in the book "Treasury of Home Remedies." Linda Rector says in the book "Linda Page's Healthy Healing," that consuming horseradish regenerates and heals the liver while also keeping it cleansed of toxins that accumulate over time. Jensen notes that the presence of sulfur, fluorine and potassium make this food the ultimate liver cleanser and body mineralizer.

Oranges

Oranges are plentiful in both vitamin C and antioxidants making them effective for enhancing the natural function of the liver. They contain compounds that help the liver to break down toxins and promote regeneration, according to Laurie and Alex Steelsmith in the book "Natural Choices for Women's Health." Eating oranges and other citrus fruits, like grapefruit, lemons and limes, can protect the liver and encourage expulsion of toxins, Robin Keuneke says in the book "Total Breast Health." Oranges also have a high water content, which helps to flush out the liver.
