Taking fitness classes at a gym allows you to work out with others and can help keep you consistent and motivated with your physical activity. Step classes incorporate an aerobics activity and utilize a small step for different movements to music.
Calories Burned
According to Health Status, a 150-lb. person will burn about 540 calories per 45-minute, high-impact step workout. Low-impact step classes will burn fewer calories, as that same 150-lb. person will burn 358 calories during a lower-intensity, 45-minute workout.
Considerations
Not all step classes are taught at the same intensity. How difficult the class is will make a significant impact on calories burned in the 45 minutes. In addition, heavier people will burn more calories than those who are lighter per period of exercise time.
Burn More Calories
You can increase the number of calories you burn during your 45-minute step class. If the teacher approves, hold dumbbells to increase the intensity of appropriate movements. For movements that just require a step up onto the step, see if your teacher would be okay with you adding a hop to the movement as well.
