Losing weight takes a lot of effort and time. However, being overweight or obese can lead to serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure, making it extremely important to shed extra pounds. Although it may be tempting for a dieter to spend time and money on products or diets that promise quick results, these methods are generally a waste of money and offer temporary results. Instead, it is important to modify the lifestyle by following a consistent diet.

Benefits

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention people who lose weight through a consistent diet can notice improvements in conditions related to obesity. These improvements include stabilized blood sugar levels and lowered blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels. In addition weight loss can boost energy levels, increase physical mobility and improve both self confidence and mood in general. The website also notes that people who lose weight through a consistent diet are more likely to keep excess weight off long-term.

Method

The Mayo Clinic explains that a consistent low-calorie diet can promote weight loss. Because 1 lb. equals about 3,500 calories, the dieter must eliminate 3,500 calories from her diet every week in order to lose about 1 lb. a week. Broken down, this is about 500 calories less per day. She should be sure to add five servings of veggies and fruit as well as whole-grains, low-fat dairy and lean meats to her daily diet. Adding exercise to a diet plan can help burn off additional calories.

Tips

The Reader's Digest suggests that a consistent dieter only drink water after breakfast. This is because the average person in the United States gets about 245 of his daily calories from beverages like soda or juice. To monitor calories, he should carry along a small notebook to jot down food eaten. This can help prevent overeating. A dieter should also consistently eat about six small meals every day, instead of the typical three. Distributing calories in this fashion can encourage the body's release of insulin, which controls the blood sugar level and hunger.

Considerations

Because it is likely that a dieter will slip up and eat badly on some instances, the KidsHealth website recommends that she forgive herself. Being consistent with a diet can be challenging. If she slips up, she should move on and get right back on track. She should refrain from telling herself that she will do better tomorrow or get back on track after the New Year--this can make it easier to eat poorly and gain weight back.

Warnings

It is important that a consistent diet is used to lose weight gradually, about 1 or 2 lbs. every week. Losing weight too quickly can lower the metabolism and temperature, causing the body to go into starvation mode. This can cause the brain processes to function abnormally, resulting in forgetfulness and confusion. Illnesses such as anorexia nervosa can also lead to organ shrinkage, osteoporosis and a drop in blood pressure and heart rate.
