Cholesterol is a type of fatty molecule made by your body and also found in foods with animal origins. Seventy-five percent of the cholesterol in your blood is made by your body while the other 25 percent is from your food, according to the American Heart Association. Limit your intake of fatty animal foods to keep your cholesterol levels within healthy limits. The American Heart Association recommends you eat no more than 300mg of cholesterol per day.

Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese with one percent fat has 10mg of cholesterol per ½-cup serving and 370mg of sodium. There are 80 calories, 14g of protein, 4g of carbohydrates and 2g of fat in cottage cheese. Seventy percent of the calories in this food is protein with the remaining 30 percent of the calories split between carbs and fat.

Skim Milk

A 1-cup serving of vitamin A and D enriched skim milk has 15mg of cholesterol. There are 90 calories, 9g of protein, 13g of carbs and a trace amount of fat per cup. Fifty-eight percent of the calories in milk are from carbs, 40 percent of the calories from protein and about 3 percent from fat. Skim milk also has 130mg of sodium per serving.

American Cheese

A slice of whole-milk, American cheese has 25mg of cholesterol and 450mg of sodium. There are 110 calories per slice with 6g of protein, 1g of carbohydrate and 9g of fat. Twenty-two percent of the calories in this cheese come from protein, 4 percent from carbs and nearly 75 percent from fat.

Chicken Breast

A 3-oz. serving of chicken breast has 72mg of cholesterol and 63mg of sodium. There are 140 calories per serving with 27g of protein, 0 g of carbs and 3.5g of fat. Seventy-seven percent of the calories in 3 oz. of chicken are from protein with the remaining 23 percent from fat.

Scallops

Eight large pieces of scallops have 104 calories, 40mg of cholesterol and 192mg of sodium. There are 20g of protein, 4g of carbs and about 1g of fat in eight large scallops. Seventy-seven percent of the calories are from protein, 15 percent from carbs and the remaining percentage from fat.

Tilapia

A 4-oz. serving of tilapia has 110 calories, 64mg of cholesterol and 60mg of sodium. There are 23g of protein, 0g of carbohydrate and 2g of fat. Eighty-four percent of the calories in tilapia are from protein and 16 percent of the calories are from fat.
