While in a long-distance relationship or relationship with a girl who loves to talk, some guys might be at a loss for words as to what to say on the phone or over dinner. It can be stressful to have to think of things to say and how to carry on a conversation. Talking to your girlfriend should be easy and natural, but it may take some work to get to that point in your relationship. Choosing topics that you know you both can converse about will help open the doors to talking to your girlfriend.

Shared Interests

It's likely that you and your girlfriend have a variety of things in common. Although it might not be immediately apparent, do some research and learn about those things you both enjoy. Perhaps you like the same band, and can talk about its upcoming album. Maybe you both love action movies and can talk about the latest production news. Find those common bonds and you'll both be engaged in the conversation.

Family Life

Everyone has a history, and that history makes for great conversation with your girlfriend. Some girls love to talk about themselves, so ask her questions about where she grew up, about her family dynamic and about her siblings. She'll most likely have a lot to say about the people in her family. Just be sensitive to girls who may not have good relationships with a parent, so that you aren't opening old wounds with your questions.

Opinions

If you have an especially informed girlfriend, talking about opinions on current events is a great way to make conversation. While some dating experts warn against talking about current events and hot-button issues, as long as it is done respectfully and intelligently there shouldn't be a problem. Even if you and your girlfriend have differing opinions, it's a good opportunity to learn more about each other.

Daily Life

Talking about the common, everyday goings-on that your girlfriend deals with at her job, with her friends and with her family gives you insight into what makes her tick. While you can always talk about extraordinary happenings, learning about what she deals with on a daily basis can tell you a lot about her outlook on life.

Goals

See how close to the same page you are as a couple by asking your girlfriend where she sees herself in five years, 10 years and 20 years. This simple question can give you literally hours of conversation as she thinks aloud about her goals. You can also find out where you fit into her plans for the future. Talk about your shared goals and talk about what to do to reach those goals.
