The food guide pyramid, a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services, was reformulated based on updated research findings and presented to the public in 2005.

Purpose

The new food guide pyramid for children, just like its associated pyramids for adults and teens, is intended to help in the selection of healthy food and lifestyle choices.

Age Groups

Dietary recommendations presented in the food guide pyramid are divided according to age groups: 2 to 5 years old; 6 to 11 years old; teens; adults.

Considerations

The given recommendations are for healthy individuals; children or adults with health problems need to consult their health care providers for specific recommendations.

New Look

The old food pyramid has been turned on its side, with the food groups represented as horizontal stripes of varying widths, based on the quantity that food group represents in the daily diet.

Kid-Friendly

The newest food guide pyramid website is interactive, providing parents a learning tool to involve children in developing and maintaining healthy eating choices and learning the value of regular physical activity--while providing children with a fun tool to get them on the right track to develop lifelong healthy eating habits.
