How to Prepare for a Colon Cleanse

It is typical for your doctor to ask you to perform a colon cleanse before a colonoscopy or other diagnostic procedure in which obtaining accurate images of the colon is essential, according to "Gastrointestinal Nursing." Many people find preparing for a colon cleanse intimidating and anxiety-provoking because they do not know what to expect, according to "Foundations of Nursing," but by educating and preparing yourself for your colon cleanse, you can ease your anxiety and create the best possible environment for your colon cleanse.

Step 1

Plan to stay home on the day of your colon cleanse. The colon cleanse will act as a laxative, fully emptying your bowels, according to "Gastrointestinal Nursing." Expect to spend most of the day near the restroom.

Step 2

Obtain a list of liquids you may consume the day of your colon cleanse. Purchase a variety of the suggested liquids. Though the colon cleanse will require that you drink a large volume of liquid, frequent bowel movements, which will be caused by the colon cleanse, can lead to dehydration, according to "Foundations of Nursing." Dehydration can be avoided by drinking extra fluids between colon-cleansing drinks.

Step 3

Purchase flushable baby wipes to have on hand the day of your colon cleanse. Frequent bowel movements and subsequent wiping with coarse toilet tissue can lead to skin irritation and soreness on the buttocks, according to "Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing," which can be prevented by using soft baby wipes.
