How to Check Glucose Levels Without Blood

Traditionally, assessing your blood glucose level requires obtaining a blood sample, usually from the fingertip, according to "Foundations of Nursing." However, "Diabetes for Dummies" notes that the GlucoWatch was approved by the FDA in 2001. The GlucoWatch is a non-invasive blood sugar monitoring device that is worn on the wrist like a wristwatch and tests blood sugar every 10 minutes for up to 13 hours at a time.

Step 1

Complete a training program in using your GlucoWatch. According to "Diabetes for Dummies," doctors that prescribe the GlucoWatch will commonly provide in-office training.

Step 2

Wear the GlucoWatch on your wrist, ensuring that the sensors rest flush against your skin. The sensors measure the glucose in fluid that is painlessly pulled from your skin using a mild electric current.

Step 3

Check your blood glucose readings whenever you desire by looking at your GlucoWatch. "Diabetes for Dummies" mentions that you may also choose to set your GlucoWatch to alert you by sounding an alarm when your blood glucose levels deviate from the normal range.

Tips and Warnings

  • The GlucoTrack is expected to be FDA approved in 2012. It measures blood glucose levels by clipping to your ear and uses the same technology as the GlucoWatch. The GlucoTrack can be used by up to three people at the same time. Unlike the GlucoWatch, the GlucoTrack is only worn for a few moments and provides a blood glucose reading right away.
