Elliptical trainers can be an effective method of exercise when trying to lose weight, build endurance and increase muscle mass. The elliptical is a low-impact machine. Its two pedals move in a fluid, circular motion, while the arm handles move back and forth in unison. The pedals and the handles enable this machine to deliver a full-body workout.

Identification

The Precor Elliptical Trainer is a popular elliptical machine. Unlike on most other elliptical models, you can increase the incline and the pedals stride length on this machine. The Precor is also electric and comes with a number of settings that allow you to track your progress through caloric burn, time and speed.

Strength Training

You can use this machine as part of a good strength training routine by adjusting the resistance so you are strength training the upper and lower body. While some use this machine for cardiovascular purposes only, it is important to consider your specific goals. According to "Women's Health Magazine," strength training is more effective for weight loss than cardiovascular training. Strength training also replaces fat with lean muscle, so your results are more noticeable. To lose weight more effectively on this machine, set the resistance level to high.

Benefits

One major benefit to this machine is that it offers a full-body workout. The resistance is equally divided between the handles and pedals; however, if you rather focus on upper body versus lower body, adjust the resistance so it is higher on either the pedals or the handles. This machine also delivers a low-impact workout, so it is safe on your joints, and also aids your posture by keeping it in proper form due to the placement of the handles and pedals.

Comparisons

Not all elliptical machines are created equal. Some are not electric, meaning you are not able to track your progress and chose a workout setting. Others come without handles, enabling you to only complete a lower body workout. Some models are made with electric setting and handle bars, but do not allow you to adjust the resistance to upper or lower body areas, making it difficult to target certain muscle groups.

Considerations

While the Precor Elliptical Trainer is a safe and effective machine, be sure to not overexert yourself and to track your heart rate. If at anytime you experience dizziness, set the elliptical to a slow setting and focus on your breathing. Consult a physician prior to partaking in an exercise regimen, and be sure to drink water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
