Hillsborough County, Florida, offers activity-filled summer programs through its Parks and Recreation Department. Activities take place at one of the more than three dozen recreational facilities managed by the department. Many of the summer programs are provided to county residents at no cost. Fees are charged for some classes, day or week-long camps, campsites and canoe or kayak rentals. Reduced fees are available for families that qualify.
Facilities
Each recreational facility offers a variety of program and activities. Some facilities offer swimming pools, fitness centers, gymnasiums, playground equipment and tennis and volleyball courts. Other facilities offer picnic shelters for summer picnics and softball fields. You'll also find lighted basketball and racquetball courts at a few of the facilities. Many of the facilities offer pre-teen and teen programs. You can also rent equipment from some of the facilities.
Classes
The county offers a wealth of classes that interest all age groups. The classes are available year-round. Classes offered include aerobics, cheerleading, karate, art, basketball, cooking, dance, self-defense and more. Many of the classes are designed to appeal to a certain age group. Classes are held at various recreation centers, so check with the nearby facilities to get more information and schedules, and to register.
Camps
The county offers half-day, full-day and week-long camps at locations around the county. Choose from adventure or aquatic camps as well as art, sports or tennis camps. You'll also find camps for teens that offer plenty of activities such as playing video games, go-cart racing, laser tag, fishing and field trips. Prices vary depending on the length of the camp.
Activities for Teens
You'll find summer programs for teens offering activities to help keep teenagers off the street while keeping them busy. Programs include arts and cultural activities at area parks. Teens can also play on park teams in sports including flag football, basketball and summer softball. Teenage girls can participate in the Girls Club to enjoy activities and guest speakers from various regional organizations such as Big Brother, Big Sister. In July, teens can attend the annual Beach Bash.
Rentals
Hillsborough County offers facility and shelter rentals, ideal for family gatherings, parties and reunions. Try canoeing or kayaking by taking advantage of the county's rental program. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for a minimum of four hours. Rent the vessels at one of four parks. You can also rent a campsite at one of three parks in Ruskin, Plant City and Lithia. The campsites offer electricity and water along with plenty of outdoor recreation including boat launches, bank and pier fishing, bird watching, hiking and beach fun.
