There are many causes for itchy skin or pruritis. Dryness, sunburn, allergic reactions, and other inflammatory skin conditions are all common causes of an itch that just will not quit. While there exist many ways to treat such irritations, you should first talk to your family physician to find the underlying cause of your itchy skin. There are however, some remedies that you can try before you scratch yourself to death. Some use medications such as Benadryl, or diphenhydramine, and Atarax, or Hydroxyzine, but there are home remedies to help to relieve the pain and anguish of an itch that will not go away. One such remedy is the use of pineapple.
Step 1
Cut open your pineapple and pour an adequate amount of the pineapple juice onto a washcloth. Pineapple contains bromelain, a mixture of enzymes that has been found to decrease inflammation. Bromelain has also been made into a dietary supplement that can be purchased over the counter. You can purchase bromelain in tablet form, or you can just use a real pineapple.
Step 2
Apply the pineapple juice on the washcloth over the area, or areas that are affected. In addition to, or instead of, you can use a slice of pineapple and rub it over the affected areas as well.
Step 3
Allow the pineapple juice to dry over a 15 minute period on your skin. At this point, you should be getting some relief.
Step 4
Gently remove the dried pineapple juice with a warm, wet washcloth soaked in tap water.
Step 5
Dry your skin with a clean towel.
Step 6
Feel free to eat the rest of the pineapple.
