It may seem like a simple task, but selecting a badminton racket can be difficult, especially if you don't know the difference between the various types of badminton rackets available on the market. Badminton rackets come in standard shapes and sizes, but the real difference is in the location of balance points and "sweet spots," areas that deliver most impact when hit by the shuttlecock.

Types

The Picky Guide website divides badminton rackets into two categories, the first being the conventional racket, which is oval in shape, and the second being the isometric racket, which has a square head. Conventional rackets are designed to deliver forceful hits by virtue of having a larger sweet spot, while isometric rackets deliver more impact if the shuttlecock hits the sweet spot directly. The Badminton Avenue website lists other types of rackets as well, including ones with diamond-shaped heads and those with wider frames.

Strings

When buying a badminton racket, first consider the string tension that's appropriate for your needs. Different types of rackets are designed for different levels of the sport; however, it is difficult to determine if the string tension is appropriate for your play. You may have to test different rackets to get this right. Badminton strings are usually made of nylon which provides more flexibility. Tight strings are designed to provide more control, while loose strings give more power.

Shaft

The second most important aspect you must look at while selecting a badminton racket is the frame shaft. The shaft determines the flexibility of the racket when playing. Just like strings, a stiff shaft is designed to provide more control, while a flexible shaft delivers more power.

Shock

The amount of shock that the frame receives while playing is important, especially if you play the sport professionally. Professional players need a racket with a grommet stripe that helps in absorbing most of the shock, thereby delivering a better performance.

Cost

As of November 2010, professional badminton rackets typically cost between $150 and $200. If you are looking for a racket that can help you learn the sport, choose beginner rackets that start at around $10. Some of the top brands include Yonex and Wilson. Ideally, purchase the racket from a sporting goods store and not online, since this way you'll be able to test different rackets before choosing one that you feel most comfortable with.
