If you want to improve your skills at the game of basketball and play like the professionals do, then you need to practice as much as possible. It is important that you learn the fundamentals of the game, and develop your abilities through repetition and regular practice. You can perform several different drills, which are also used by the pros, that will help you with your shooting, defense and rebounding.

4 Spot Fast Break Shooting

This is a great drill to help you with your shooting abilities on the fast break. You can do it by yourself or with a teammate. Start at half court and run toward the three-point line. Have your teammate throw the ball to you. If you are alone, throw the ball high in the air with a backspin so the ball will bounce once and then toward you as your run toward it. Run into the ball and quickly catch it and shoot. Keep running toward the basket and rebound your shot. If you missed the initial shot, shoot a layup after rebounding. Run back to the half-court line again. On the way, perform a dribble move as if avoiding a defender as you pass by the three-point line. Repeat the drill several times.

Monkey in the Middle

The monkey in the middle drill will help you with your defense on the pass. Stand in the middle of two teammates who are about three to four meters apart. Give teammate 1 the ball. Go over and guard him with your hands in the air. His job is to try to pass the ball to the teammate 2 while you try to block or force him to make an errant pass. If he completes the pass to teammate 2, run over and guard him the same way. Continue going back and forth or rotate spots with your teammates after every few passes.

Taps Drill

The taps drill will help you improve your rebounding and ball control under the hoop. Throw the ball against the backboard and as it bounces back jump up and tap the ball onto the backboard with your right hand. Continue jumping and tapping the ball with your right hand without the ball falling to the ground. Do this 10 times. On the 10th tap, try to tap the ball into the basket. Then perform the drill again while using only your left hand. Perform the drill from both sides of the hoop. It may be difficult to tap the ball 10 times in a row at first. Keep practicing until you are successful.
