For a variety of reasons, including low hormones, stress and poor diet, low libido can be a problem for both men and women. While the underlying reasons for low libido are different for each sex and each individual, there are a variety of herbs available that can be used to address each person's needs.

Instructions

Step 1

Start with an aphrodisiac. While the underlying reason for low libido does need to be addressed to increase it long term, an aphrodisiac can help on a short-term basis. This is often important in order to boost self-confidence. Both damiana and yohimbe can work quickly to stimulate desire, but because both of these can have side effects, those who need to use an aphrodisiac for a long period of time should choose a safer herb such as maca root or epimedium, which do not pose as many side effects.

Step 2

Choose an herb that will balance hormone levels. Both males and females need balanced hormones in order to have a healthy sex drive. Chinese ginseng and sarsaparilla can raise testosterone levels, making them good choices for men. According to Mark Stengler, N.D., sepia can balance female hormones. Muira pauma is also an excellent herb for women, as it can increase vaginal lubrication.

Step 3

Add an herb that will strengthen the adrenals. To address low libido in the long term, the adrenal glands must be strengthened, as they produce many of the sex hormones and help the body deal with stress. According to Steve Schechter, N.D., bee pollen can stimulate the adrenals and enhance the libido. Schizandra and ashwangandha are adrenal strengtheners that are also mild aphrodisiacs.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consider using an herbal formula designed to increase libido. While choosing herbs separately gives you the opportunity to design an herbal regimen specific to your needs, it can be expensive and time consuming. Many companies now offer male- and female-specific tonics that will often include a combination of herbs that will act as aphrodisiacs, balance hormones and strengthen the adrenals. Don't expect overnight results. Many herbs, especially those that balance hormones and strengthen adrenals, can take four to six weeks to begin to work. In order to see lasting results, it is important to take these herbs on a regular basis.
  • Consult your physician before taking any herbal supplements to ensure that they will not interfere with medications.
