Dry mouth at night is an unpleasant sensation that can result in a variety of problems, including loss of sleep, chapped lips, difficulty chewing or swallowing, mouth sores, bad breath, speech difficulties and an increase in dental cavities. Often dry mouth is easily resolved by lifestyle changes and simple remedies. See your physician or dentist if your dry mouth doesn't improve as dry mouth is a common side effect of medication and can often be resolved by an adjustment in your medications. Dry mouth may also be caused by anxiety or stress, or may be a sign of more serious illness.

Step 1

Increase your intake of water. Dry mouth can be an indication you're dehydrated. Drink two cups of water for every cup of caffeinated beverage such as coffee, tea or soda, as caffeine acts as a diuretic.

Step 2

Avoid salty, sweet and spicy foods, especially before bedtime. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which contain water.

Step 3

Brush and floss your teeth before you go to bed at night. Use over-the-counter fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash formulated for dry mouth. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes, which will intensify dry mouth. Artificial saliva is also available over the counter, or your dentist may be able to prescribe a stronger artificial saliva product.

Step 4

Suck on ice chips in the evening before bed. Keep a container of ice chips or water by your bed, then sip the water as needed to relieve dry mouth throughout the night.

Step 5

Place a room humidifier in your bedroom, and turn on the humidifier when you go to bed at night. Moist air can help to reduce symptoms of dry mouth.

Step 6

Avoid wearing dentures during the night, as dentures can contribute to dry mouth. Soak dentures overnight to keep them fresh and clean.
