Tamoxifen, also known as Nolvadex, is a drug that treats breast cancer at its early and late stages.

Features

According to the experts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Tamoxifen blocks the female hormone estrogen from attaching to cancer cell receptors in the breast. Estrogen is a chemical of the body responsible for breast cancer growth.

Side Effects

According to Medscape, Tamoxifen's side effects include hot flashes, nausea, headache, hair loss and decreased libido. Call your doctor if these or any other side effects develop.

Precaution

Tell your doctor about your allergies, medications, medical history and if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding. These can pose serious problems when taking Tamoxifen.

Overdose

Be careful when taking Tamoxifen. According to the NIH, signs of overdose include dizziness, shaking and loss of balance. Call your doctor or 911 right away if you experience these symptoms.

Other Uses

Tamoxifen can be used to treat McCune-Albright's syndrome (disease characterized by bone disorders, early puberty and skin spots) and induce ovulation (egg release) necessary for pregnancy, according to MedLine Plus.
