Many holiday dinners include a pumpkin pie, a loaf of pumpkin bread or another item made with pumpkin. Pumpkin is so popular an ingredient that Food.com lists more than 6,500 recipes using it. Use canned pumpkin as a convenient alternative to fresh pumpkin.

Calories

One cup of canned pumpkin contains only 83 calories. But few people eat pumpkin right from the can. One popular recipe using canned pumpkin is that holiday favorite, pumpkin pie. One-eighth of a 9-inch pumpkin pie made with the most common recipe contains 316 calories. Should you decide to add a 6-tbsp. dollop of whipped cream to the top, it will add an additional 50 calories.

Nutrition

One cup of pumpkin, straight from the can, is low in fat and contains 20 g of carbohydrates, including 7 g of dietary fiber, plus 3 g of protein. It also provides a rich source of vitamins A, C, E, K, carotene, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.

Burn Those Calories

Once you've indulged in a piece of pumpkin pie, you may want to exercise to burn off the calories. CalorieKing says that you'll need to walk for 88 minutes, swim for 26 minutes, jog for 36 minutes or cycle for 48 minutes. If you want to only burn off the calories for the canned pumpkin alone, you would have to walk for 23 minutes, jog for 10 minutes, swim for seven minutes or cycle for 13 minutes.
