Vitamin B-12, also known as cyanocobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin available in injectable form. It is considered to be an energy vitamin because of the energy increase and boost to your metabolism it provides. Vitamin B-12 is important to the production of red blood cells and central nervous system functioning. It may be used in the treatment of several conditions, including pernicious anemia, fatigue and B-12 deficiency in vegetarians. Side effects from vitamin B-12 range from nonexistent to mild. However, side effects may be associated with receiving B-12 shots.

Injection-site Irritation

Mild side effects to vitamin B-12 shots are the most common. Obviously, with vitamin B-12 being delivered by injection, you may likely feel pain, swelling, irritation or tenderness at the injection site. These are expected side effects that should diminish with time. However, if the site remains red and swollen or is hot to the touch, an infection may be likely. A physician should be contacted in this case.

Stomach Upset

Common side effects, according to Drugs.com, include a generalized upset stomach that may or may not be accompanied by stomach queasiness. The side effect of feeling sick-to-the-stomach should subside as your body adjusts to the B-12 supplement. Eating several light meals with crackers may help alleviate this side effect. Periodic mild queasiness that turns into persistent nausea, however, should be evaluated by a physician.

Diarrhea

Another common mild side effect of receiving vitamin B-12 shots is diarrhea. This side effect may be associated with intermittent cramping and abdominal pain. Mild diarrhea usually will dissipate as your body adjusts to the added supplement, yet this symptom should be monitored closely due to the risk of dehydration. If excess fluid loss occurs, especially with a combination of diarrhea and nausea to the point of vomiting, a serious condition may develop; in such a situation, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Pain and Dizziness

Other possible side effects that have been reported include variations of pain, specifically headaches and/or joint pain, according to Drugs.com. Headaches may be associated with slight sensations of dizziness. Lying down periodically may help alleviate these side effects. Also, feelings of numbness or tingling sensations in parts of your body may be present and accompanied by a sense of weakness. These symptoms are considered to be mild; however, if they persist or become worrisome, the physician should be contacted.
