Side Effects of Magnesium Sulfate Injections

Hypomagnesemia is a condition in which the levels of magnesium in your blood are unusually low. If you have this condition, your doctor may recommend treatment with magnesium sulfate injections to help regulate your magnesium levels. This medication may also be used to treat acute nephritis in children or prevent seizures in pregnant women caused by pre-eclampsia or eclampsia. Discuss the side effects of magnesium sulfate injections with your doctor before beginning treatment with this medication.

Hypothermia

Treatment with a magnesium sulfate injection may cause an abnormal decrease in your body temperature, a side effect called hypothermia, RxList reports. Depending upon the severity of your condition, hypothermia may cause chills, shivering, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, poor coordination, confusion or fatigue. If you exhibit any of these side effects after receiving this type of injection, seek prompt medical care.

Flushing or Sweating

You may notice that your skin appears unusually red or flushed after treatment with a magnesium sulfate injection, DailyMed explains. Excessive sweating may also occur, which may exacerbate flushing and may cause your skin to feel unusually warm or moist.

Low Blood Pressure

A decrease in your normal blood pressure may occur after you receive an injection of magnesium sulfate. Low blood pressure may cause symptoms of headache, dizziness, vision problems, upset stomach, tiredness, weakness or fainting, Drugs.com warns. Sensations of dizziness may be most apparent when you sit up or stand up quickly. Remain seated until episodes of dizziness pass in order to avoid injury from tripping, falling down or fainting.

Breathing Difficulties

An injection of magnesium sulfate may cause breathing difficulties or respiratory depression, RxList reports. You may develop shortness of breath, which may interfere with your ability to perform yous usual physical activities. If you develop severe breathing difficulties after receiving this injection, contact your physician as soon as possible.
