Erectile Dysfunction Syndrome

Erectile Dysfunction Syndrome

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is characterized by a man's inability to maintain an erection during intercourse. ED previously was called impotence. Doctors at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) report that erectile dysfunction syndrome affects millions of men at various times and most often is a result of a medical condition.

Disease

Vascular disease, which impairs blood flow to the penis, is one of the most common causes of ED.

Psychogenic Causes

In about 20 percent of the cases, AAFP doctors say that ED is based on psychogenic causes based on the body's reaction to sensory stimuli.

Organic Causes

Aging plays a major role in ED for many men. Other organic causes of ED include reaction to medication, low testosterone levels and neurological conditions.

Psychology

Though medical in nature, erectile dysfunction can play a major role in a man's self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and overall quality of life.

Treatment

Drugs that are made from phosphodiesterase inhibitors primarily are used to treat ED by relaxing penis muscles and allowing blood to flow naturally in response to stimuli.

Warning

Many lifestyle choices can affect male sexual performance. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, depression, overeating and illegal drug use all can interfere with an erection.
