Constipation is a bowel condition that can occur for many reasons. It sometimes occurs in younger children as their digestive systems develop and they transition from using diapers to having bowel movements on the toilet. Constipation can be uncomfortable, but several home remedies can be effective in treating constipation. Movement can be a way to encourage a bowel movement.
Causes
A wide range of things can cause constipation. Sometimes, multiple factors can contribute. Dehydration or low levels of fiber in your diet can make stool difficult to pass. A lack of physical activity, changes in your lifestyle and routine, repressed urges to have a bowel movement and medications are other possible causes. Your child may also have a medical condition for which constipation is a symptom.
Symptoms
The primary symptom of constipation is difficulty in passing stool. You can call your condition constipation if you go more than one day without a bowel movement or pass stool three times or less in a week. Hardened stools or excessive straining are also symptoms of constipation, as is experiencing pain while attempting to pass stool, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Exercise
Movement can help encourage your body to pass stool. The Mayo Clinic says that physical activity can stimulate intestinal activity. Do whatever types of activity are comfortable -- if your child is in pain or feels uncomfortable, try simply walking. Aerobic activities or playing outside can also be beneficial. The more active your child is, the better chance he has of overcoming his constipation.
Toilet Time
Give your child ample time on the toilet to encourage a bowel movement. While sitting on the toilet, your child should try leaning or bending forward. This act helps jostle the intestines and stimulate intestinal activity. These movements can make it easier for stool pass.
Considerations
Exercise and toilet time on their own may not be enough to relieve constipation. Do other things to encourage your child's passing of stool. Make sure he drinks plenty of water, as dehydration is a common cause of constipation. Fruits and vegetables can infuse the body with dietary fiber, and consider giving your child mild laxatives.
