How to Wear a Halter Heart Monitor

A Holter monitor is a small battery-powered device that continuously records your heart's rhythm. You wear the device for one to three days, depending on the instructions from your doctor. The machine records every heartbeat, and is usually worn if you have had any symptoms of a heart condition, such as irregular heartbeats. An electrocardiogram may be done first, but since this test only lasts a few minutes, it may not detect any problems. The Holter monitor is prescribed so the doctor can get more information about your heart's rhythm.

Step 1

Go to your doctor's office to have the Holter monitor put on. You will not do this step yourself. Your doctor will attach electrodes to your chest that are connected to the monitor, which you wear in a small bag around your waist or neck.

Step 2

Keep the monitor close to your body while you are wearing it. You must wear it continuously, including while you sleep.

Step 3

Reattach any electrodes that fall off or become loose. Your doctor should provide instructions on how to do this. If you are uncertain, consult your doctor for assistance.

Step 4

Record your activities while wearing the monitor. The doctor's office will usually provide you with an activity sheet. Write down what you do each day as you go on with your normal activities. Also make note of any symptoms you experience, such as shortness of breath or heart palpitations.

Step 5

Avoid metal detectors, magnets, high-voltage areas and electric blankets while wearing the device.

Step 6

Do not shower, bathe or swim while wearing the device. Water can damage the Holter monitor.

Step 7

Return to your doctor's office at the scheduled time to have the monitor removed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bring your activity sheet with you when you return to the doctor's office. Shower or bathe before wearing a Holter monitor. Once it is on, you cannot get it wet.
