Resveratrol is derived from various types of seed-producing plants. It's power comes from a combination of phytochemicals and other elements that function as antioxidant, antiviral and fungicidal aides to the body. Resveratrol is said to fight free radical damage, increase the flow of blood, reduce vascular plaque as well as lactic acid build-up, moderate cancerous cell growth, reduce brain cell degeneration and inflammation in Alzheimer's patients, assist in liver repair, and perform a host of other regenerative functions.
Grapes
Red and purple grapes are chock full of healthful phytochemicals as well as a chemical called phyoalexin, viniferin or stilbene. These natural elements help fight the free radicals that come from the toxins in our environment. They also help to protect our bodies from damage due to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Additionally, grapes are said to help inhibit the growth of enzymes contributing to cancer cell growth. Red wine contains the juice of red and purple grapes, and for this reason is said to be an excellent source of resveratrol.
Berries
Dark berries also contain compounds that assist the body in fighting free radicals. According to the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern Ohio University, they are a rich source of resveratrol, helping to strengthen the liver while assisting the body in moderating the growth of tumor cells. Acai and goji berries are another powerful source of resveratrol, helping to support immune function as well as contribute to overall health. According to a recent article in the "New York Daily News," acai and goji berries have an extremely high nutrient potential. All berries can be eaten fresh, dried or frozen as a refreshing snack; they can be put in salads; and they can be added to blender drinks for a refreshing and healthful pick-me-up.
Peanuts
Peanuts with their skins contain a high amount of resveratrol and can be eaten as a snack straight from the shell, or as organic, fresh peanut butter. They can also be added to salads, sauces, curries and desserts.
Pistachio Nuts
Pistachio nuts are equally high in resveratrol content. Like peanuts, they can be eaten on their own or added to a variety of foods to add flavor and nourishment.
Juices
Grape juice and berry juices are ideal ways to get your daily content of resveratrol. It is best to blend the fresh fruits if possible, adding purified water or other fruits to made a delicious smoothie.
Tips
Buy organic fruits whenever possible. Make sure when you buy your peanuts and pistachios that they are unprocessed and unsalted.
Warnings
Consult with your physician to make sure you do not have an allergy to any of the foods mentioned above. Peanuts, for example, can cause reactions in some. If you drink red wine, be sure you do not have an adverse reaction to the sulfites it contains. Buy organic red wine when possible and drink with moderation.
