According to MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, acne forms when hair follicles clog up under your skin. Acne can form on your face, chest or shoulders. There is a variety of ways to combat acne, and one method is to consume specific foods that will help to reduce or prevent the severity of acne breakouts. Add foods such as red meats, dark leafy vegetables and grains to your daily diet to provide your body with enough vitamins and minerals to keep skin healthy.

Red Meats

Red meats contain sources of zinc, which is essential for healthy skin as it helps to protect your skin cells and tissues from free-radicals, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. These substances can irritate the skin and even contribute to the development of wrinkles or fine lines. Zinc helps to reduce the severity of acne, according to The Vitamins Dairy. If you suffer from acne, take around 30 mg of zinc two times per day.

Dark Leafy Vegetables

Vitamin A helps to keep the protect tissue of your skin healthy and firm. It prevents acne by reducing the production of sebum, according to the Vitamins Diary. Vitamin A also helps the body deal with stress, which may cause acne in some people. Retinol, a form of vitamin A, helps to modify abnormal formations on the superficial layer of the skin, treating large pimples, according to the Acne Resource Center.

Grains

Grains contain B vitamins. Vitamin B6 is important for controlling premenstrual acne breakouts that occur as a result of hormonal imbalances. Also, it helps to metabolize fats, which in turns balances oil production on your skin. Another B vitamin, vitamin B1, is also a good vitamin for acne as it helps to act as an antioxidant, flushing out bacteria on your scalp and also enhances circulation in skin cells, according to "Natural Health."
