Numerous aerobic fitness certifications are available. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, group fitness instructors are expected to design their own classes and organize their own work. This means you should choose a certification that prepares you to do this. If you already have the knowledge and only need paper proof of it, a more basic certification will do. However, if you're starting from zero, it makes sense to choose a comprehensive course that can get you up to speed.

Recognized Certifications

Two of the most respected aerobic fitness certifications are ACE and AFAA, according to Vital Ethics, as website devoted to CPR and other fitness training classes. ACE or American Council on Exercise certifications and AFAA or Aerobics and Fitness Association of America certifications are easily recognized by those working in the industry. These two programs are ideal for those starting with no previous knowledge, since they will cover not only teaching practice, but also provide basic knowledge on anatomy and kinesiology, injury prevention and exercise physiology.

Regulations

There are no official, standard rules regarding what's needed to become a certified aerobic instructor. In fact, many gyms and sports centers will train their own staff to teach, while others will hire aerobic instructors who have experience teaching, even if they're not certified. Some of the major certification bodies, such as ACE, require a CPR or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certification before allowing students to take a fitness certification. Others, like AFAA, require people to complete a practical, hands-on workshop. Most certifications will only accept those who are at least 18 years of age for an exam. More basic certifications have no requisites.

Online Certifications

Online certifications are best for those who already have some practical experience and don't need guidance to learn from the basics. According to the Starting a Personal Training Business website, online certifications are often more affordable and a good choice for those who can't find the time in their schedule to attend a workshop.

Study Process

Most of the aerobic fitness certifications programs are self-study. You can buy the materials online, prepare for the exam and then register for it. Materials can include anything from books to DVDs to flash cards. Some certification bodies offer workshops, usually over a weekend or a period of three days. Many certifications are self-paced, so you can order the materials and study until you feel ready to register for or complete the exam.

Practical Exam

Only the major schools require a practical exam for certification. According to fitness site TurnStep, to receive a Primary Aerobic Certification from AFAA you'll have to do a group exercise demonstration that includes sample exercises for different muscle groups. Some online certifications require you to take photos or make a video of yourself leading a class or showing certain moves. This is then mailed in with your exam for grading.
