Things That Lower BUN & Creatinine Levels

Numerous conditions or factors can lower BUN and creatine levels.

Numerous conditions or factors can lower BUN and creatinine levels. According to the MedlinePlus website, blood urea nitrogen, or BUN, is a product that forms in your blood when protein breaks down. Tests can measure the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood. Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important component of your muscles. Creatinine can be measured with a urine test.

Liver Disease

Liver disease, especially severe liver disease, can lower both BUN and creatinine levels in your body. According to the University of Illinois Medical Center, or UIMC, liver disease may be caused by numerous factors, including congenital birth defects, metabolic disorders and certain nutritional deficiencies. If your liver becomes inflamed or infected, it may not be able to perform its usual functions. Liver disease can be caused by numerous factors, including viral infection, bacterial invasion, chemical or physical changes within your body, malnutrition and alcoholism. Common signs and symptoms associated with liver disease include decreased BUN and creatinine levels, jaundice or yellowing of your skin, nausea, loss of appetite, unintended weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, and depression. The UIMC states that some, but not all, liver diseases can be prevented.

Pancreatic Insufficiency

Pancreatic insufficiency can cause decreased levels of BUN in your body. Dr. Dicken Weatherby, a naturopathic physician and author of the textbook "Blood Chemistry and CBC Analysis" states that decreased BUN is associated with pancreatic insufficiency. Pancreatic insufficiency manifests when your pancreas does not secrete the proper amount of chemicals and digestive enzymes for normal digestion to occur. Severe pancreatic deficiency can lead to impaired absorption of nutrients by your intestines. Malabsorption of nutrients can cause deficiencies in key nutrients and fatty stools. Common signs and symptoms associated with pancreatic insufficiency include decreased BUN levels, undigested food in your stool, food allergies, indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea, the sensation of fullness after meals and drowsiness after consuming high-carbohydrate meals.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis can cause low levels of creatinine in your body, states Weatherby. According to MayoClinic.com, multiple sclerosis is a potentially debilitating autoimmune condition in which your body's immune system destroys the protective myelin sheath that surrounds your nerves. Loss of your myelin sheath disrupts communication between your brain and the rest of your body. In most cases, your nerves are eventually affected too, which causes irreversible damage to your nervous system. MayoClinic.com states that, although multiple sclerosis can occur at any age, it usually manifests between the ages of 20 and 40. Women are more likely than men to develop this condition. Common signs and symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis include decreased creatinine levels, numbness or weakness in one or more limbs, vision problems, tingling or pain throughout your body, lack of coordination, fatigue and dizziness.
