If you are trying to lose weight, limiting alcohol consumption is one way to cut empty calories from your diet. One gram of alcohol contains seven calories with no nutritional value. If you do drink alcohol, choose lower-calorie options.

White Wine

One of your lowest calorie options, all dry white wines have about the same calories -- 65 calories for a 100-ml glass. Sweeter whites contain about 90 calories for the same amount.

Red Wine

All red wine varieties, including cabernet, merlot, shiraz and zinfandel, contain about 70 calories in a 100-ml glass.

Sherry

A 100-ml glass of dry sherry contains about 110 calories. Sweeter sherries rank in at about 130 calories.

Champagne

A sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region of France, a 100-ml flute of champagne supplies about 126 calories to your celebration.

Port

Originally a portuguese dessert wine, port is manufactured in countries all over the world. At 160 calories for a 100-ml glass, port is still in the middle of calorie options.

Rum

After wine, one of the lowest calorie alcoholic beverages is rum with 200 calories for a 100-ml glass of 80-proof rum. Choose low-calorie mixers, such as club soda, to limit calorie content.
