Irish oatmeal is also known as steel-cut oatmeal. It is steamed to prevent rancidity during storage and then dried. It is then cut into small pieces with steel blades, rather than being rolled.
Benefits
One serving, 1/4 cup or 40 g of uncooked oats, contains 150 calories and 2.5 g of fat, of which 0.5 g is saturated fat. Irish oats contain 27 g of carbohydrates, of which 3 g are fiber and less than 1 g is sugar. The remainder is starch. One serving also includes 4 g of protein.
Minerals
Oatmeal also contains the minerals calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, fluoride and selenium, according to the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory. Minerals are used in your body to build bones and soft tissue, and they are needed for processing heart rhythm, distribution of oxygen throughout the body and healthy blood pressure.
Fiber
Oatmeal contains soluble and insoluble fiber. Both are necessary for colon health and they can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. Eating 25 to 35 g of dietary fiber a day helps prevent constipation and lowers the risk of hemorrhoids.
