An HIV diagnosis can be devastating. However, you can learn how to stay healthy and take control. Major advancements in the treatment and management of HIV have occurred over the years, so people with HIV should lead a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent complications and stay healthy.
Step 1
Visit your doctor. Get blood work done regularly to monitor viral load and other issues related to HIV. Speak to your doctor about how often to have blood work done. Regular blood work will help your physician identify if a change in your treatment plan is needed, or if other health problems must be addressed. In addition, learn the signs and symptoms of problems or complications that you should report to your doctor immediately.
Step 2
Take medications as directed. If you are on antiretroviral therapy, medication adherence is important. Medications usually have specific instructions on how and when to be taken. If you miss your medications or do not take them correctly, it can lead to medication resistance, which makes the virus more difficult to treat. Understand your medications and how to manage side effects, and speak to your doctor if the medication regimen is not working out for your lifestyle.
Step 3
Eat well and exercise regularly. Eating healthy and participating in regular physical activity helps prevent obesity and ensure you are getting the proper nutrition. Before starting a strenuous exercise program, make sure that you are cleared by your doctor. Physical activity does not have to be complicated. Take a brisk walk, join the gym, go biking or swimming. Choose lean meats and proteins, low-fat or non-fat dairy, fruits and vegetables. Opt for complex carbohydrates and high-fiber foods.
Step 4
Avoid smoking, drinking and doing drugs, which can all lead to health problems. If you smoke, talk to your doctor about ways that you can quit. If you abuse alcohol or drugs, seek the advice of a counselor and get the help you need to stop.
Step 5
Get support. Know who you can turn to. It may be a family member or a friend. If you don't have someone close you can disclose your status to, talk to a counselor or support group. Having HIV is a difficult thing to deal with on your own.
Step 6
Stay informed. Many different resources and community support services are available to people with HIV. In addition, websites abound with updated information related to advocacy and new advances. Being informed helps you stay in control and understand the options available to you.
