The fear of public speaking is one of the most pressing fears in the Western world. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld joked that people are more afraid of giving a public speech than they are of death, according to Time magazine. This fear can cause stuttering, flushing, sweating and other symptoms. Although you may overcome the fear of public speaking through practice, rehearsal and appropriate planning, certain supplements may help reduce or eliminate the anxiety associated with speaking to a group. Check with your doctor before starting a supplement regimen to address public speaking fears.
Passionflower
Passionflower is a thin, flowering herb that is native to Peru, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." This herb was used by ancient Incas as a tranquilizer and sleep aid. The chemicals in passionflower, called flavonoids, ethyl maltol and maltol, may offer a mild tranquilizing effect that may ease public speaking fears. It may help calm the central nervous system, helping to prevent sweating, skin redness and other anxiety-related symptoms. Contact your physician if you plan to use passionflower. This herb may cause drowsiness.
Vitamin B Complex
A B-complex supplement may reduce the symptoms of anxiety, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." These supplements typically contain thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, which may help calm your nerves. Vitamin B6, or pyroxidine, also soothes the central nervous system and may help boost your energy levels. Niacin, a third component of B-complex vitamins, may promote the secretion of calming brain chemicals. Talk to your physician before taking a B-complex supplement to help you overcome your fear of public speaking.
Skullcap
Traditional Chinese physicians have recommended skullcap for centuries as a natural tranquilizer, according to Castleman. This plant gained popularity in the United States in the 1850s for its calming effects, and modern Western herbalists still recommend it to help curb the effects of anxiety. This may help you reduce fears as you approach the stage or podium to give your speech. Although side effects are rare, this herb may cause confusion or euphoria. However, it is less likely to cause drowsiness than passionflower. Check with your doctor before taking skullcap supplements.
