Your daily calorie needs are represented in your total daily energy expenditure. The TDEE includes a measurement of your basal metabolic rate and accounts for your activity level as well.

Significance

The number of calories you need in a given day depends on many factors including your age, weight, height, sex and activity level. Therefore, the number of calories that you burn per pound will depend on these factors.

Calculation

To find the number of calories burned per pound, you first need to calculate your TDEE and then divide by your weight in pounds. TDEE is calculated by multiplying your BMR times an activity factor which varies from 1.2 to 1.9 depending on how active you are.

Considerations

Any extra calories you consume but do not burn off on a normal day go to storage. Fat can store about 3,500 calories per 1 lb., according Good Housekeeping. Therefore, after calculating your TDEE and comparing it to your calorie intake, you can estimate whether you should be gaining or losing weight over the long term.
