Aloe vera is a cactuslike plant with long, thick fronds that yield a syrupy liquid. Aloe vera contains the monosaccharides glucose, fructose and mannose as well as the polysaccharides composed of glucose-mannose chains. Polysaccharides may be one of the sources of aloe vera's immunological benefits. Additionally, aloe contains salicylic acid, which reduces fever and inflammation; saponins, which are antiseptics; sterols, which are analgesics; and various vitamins.
Vitamin A
Aloe vera is rich in beta carotene and retinol, which are varieties of vitamin A. In addition to being an antioxidant, vitamin A promotes healthy skin, bones and eyes. Moreover, it strengthens the immune system, improves cellular function and aids in reproduction. MedlinePlus avers that vitamin A is one of the 13 nutrients essential for proper development and bodily function.
B-Complex Vitamins
Aloe vera contains several B-complex vitamins, including vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12. Vitamin B1, or thiamine, assists in metabolism, tissue growth and neurological functioning. Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, assists with energy production as well as tissue maintenance. Vitamin B3, also called niacin, is essential for neurological functioning, energy production and metabolism. Pyridoxine, which is vitamin B6, helps regulate hormones, metabolism and neurological function. Vitamin B12, or cyanocobalamin, helps synthesize proteins and regulate metabolism.
Vitamin C
Like many fruits and vegetables, aloe vera contains vitamin C, or ascorbic acid. This vitamin is among the most important, promoting a healthy immune system as well as healthy skin, joints, bones and other tissue. Furthermore, it assists in the production of collagen and helps fight infections. Vitamin C is also a known antioxidant.
Vitamin E
One of aloe vera's most notable properties is vitamin E, or tocopherol, which provides healthful benefits both when it's ingested and applied topically. When ingested, vitamin E promotes healthy skin, aids in tissue healing and improves reproductive health. Vitamin E is also a known antioxidant. Applied topically, vitamin E has similar benefits, assisting in the healing process and promoting healthy skin.
Folic Acid
Aloe vera contains folic acid, which is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Furthermore, it is necessary for neurological functioning and red blood cell development. Deficiencies in folic acid can cause birth defects like spina bifida and harelip.
