Bumps on Legs After Shaving

Shaving is inexpensive and you only need a couple tools --- a razor and some shaving cream or soap. For this reason, it might be one of the more preferred methods of hair removal. But the end result, if your skin is sensitive to shaving, may be bumpy, red legs. You'll get a better shave if you take care of that sensitive skin or use alternative hair removal methods.

Significance

Bumps on legs after shaving make the skin feel as though it was never shaved at all. Instead of smooth, shaved skin, the result is bump, often red, skin that feels rough.

Causes

Some people have more sensitive skin than others. The medical term for the bumps on legs after shaving is pseudo-folliculitis, a condition that only occurs on areas you shave such as the legs. As you shave, you peel off the top layer of your skin, a process that may harm already sensitive skin. Ingrown hairs often occur from frequent shaving. As the leg hair grows, it grows inside of the tissue instead of outside of the follicle. This cause the legs to feel bumpy.

Prevention

Choose a razor with features that minimize cuts and nicks; read the packaging of several brands. Replace your razor blade often --- after every three or four uses. Soak your legs in warm water for several minutes before shaving to soften the skin. Shave slowly and shave in the direction the hair grows. Use a protective shaving cream when shaving and apply a moisturizing lotion or cream after shaving to provide further protection. Treat existing bumps on your legs with a topical acne cream containing up to five percent benzoyl peroxide.

Alternatives

Try other methods to shaving to evaluate if another hair removal method works better for your sensitive skin. Other hair removal methods include depilatories --- creams that dissolve the hair --- epilators and waxing. Switch to an electric razor as opposed to a regular razor; it may offer a smoother, gentler shave.

Warnings

Avoid irritating already irritated legs by not using products or methods that are not gentle to skin. Avoid applying products to the legs containing glycolic acid, alcohol, menthol or peppermint. Do not use a bar soap on your legs. Do not rub your legs with a loofah or washcloth after shaving.
