Coromega is an omega 3 supplement available as a flavored emulsion rather than in capsule form. According to the Coromega website, it was developed in response to a child's distaste for taking fish oil. Her grandfather, a scientist, went on to develop this product. It is said to use quality fish oil from coldwater fish that undergoes a rigorous purification process. The supplement is available in orange, chocolate orange, lemon lime and peach flavors and, according to the company website, has no "fishy aftertaste." This supplement is not known to be a medical treatment for any condition.
Fish Oil Source
Coromega Omega 3 supplement contains 2,000 mg of fish oils, which feature 350 mg of eicosopentanoic acid and 230 mg of docosohexanoic acid. According to the Corometa website, the fish oil is harvested from wild, deepwater, coldwater fish and is molecularly distilled and third-party tested to remove impurities. The fish oil is then processed, emulisified and flavored. One pouch of Coromega is said to deliver the full daily allowance of omega 3 recommended by the National Institutes of Health, the site notes.
Absorbability
A study conducted at the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine and published in the "Journal of the American Dietetic Association" assessed the absorbability of an emulsified fish oil versus standard capsule formulation. The study, which was led by Susan K. Raatz, compared the absorability of Coromega emulsfied fish oil with capsules in 10 volunteer participants between the ages of 18 and 60. At 24 hours after a single dose of each formulation, blood tests revealed a significantly higher increase in omega 3s in the Coromega group than in the capsule group.
Calories and Fat
According to the Coromega website, each packet of Coromega Omega 3 supplement contains 20 calories, all of which are derived from fat. The product's total fat content per serving is two g, with .05 g of saturated fat and no trans fat. Each packet contains 10 mg of cholesterol, no carbohydrates and 12 mg of vitamin C. It is sweetened with Stevia extract. The products also contain eggs.
Benefits
The nutritional benefits of omega 3 fish oils have been heralded in recent years by many doctors and health experts. Fish oils are reputed to have anti-inflammatory effects and may lower cholesterol and triglycerides, improve neurological function and benefit your heart. The Coromega website notes that these benefits are provided in its product in a flavorful, potent manner.
Considerations
If you or a family member cringe at the idea of taking fish oil due to an unpleasant aftertaste or so-called "fish burps," you may find that a flavored, emulsified formula might be a valid option. As the value of omega 3 fatty acids becomes more clear, supplementing with these nutrients appear to be a healthy choice. It should be noted that you can also benefit from including omega 3s in your diet, through fish such as salmon and tuna, or through enriched foods.
