Facts on Tennis Warm up

1. Full Body Armor

The entire body is used to play the game of tennis, from the eyes that watch the ball, to the hands that hold the racket and the arm that swings to hit the ball. The abs are twisted and turned while moving and the legs and feet are always in motion. A warm up that includes stretching, twisting and moving is a prerequisite to playing a top-notch game of tennis.

2. Reach for the Sky

Swing your arms from side to side to get the blood moving and to prepare the muscles for the work ahead. Reach with movement like you're reaching for and grabbing stars. Static stretching is not the best kind of stretching for tennis preparation. While stretching and holding is a vital training routine for post-game cooling down and training on off days, you'll want every stretch to include movement before a game to prepare the muscles for the rigors of the fast sport.

3. Run for the Money

You don't want to tire during a game of tennis that includes three sets and could last for hours. Aerobic training is vital to being able to maintain your speed and accuracy during the game. Get the legs prepared for the action by running in place or around the court. Your breathing will become more regulated if you get over the initial aerobic hump before you hit the first ball.

4. Foot the Bill

Your body temperature should be increased by at least one to two degrees after a good tennis warm up to prevent injuries. The outer extremities need a little more work, since the blood travels more slowly to those ends. Take time to work in some foot shuffles, back and forth and side to side, during your warmup routine. Stand on the court and take quick steps on your toes up to the net and back again. Repeat from side to side. Then do the routine flat-footed. Do this move for about 10 minutes to prepare your feet for the pounding they are about to receive.

5. Mind Your Manners

Tennis, like most sports, also is a game that requires intense concentration and a clear mind. Take time to meditate and see yourself moving easily around the court, swinging perfectly and hitting the ball over the net. See that your serves land in the box with speed and accuracy. Calm yourself before a tennis match because temper tantrums are not acceptable in this sport. You cannot throw your racket, swear out loud or curse the referee and expect to last very long in a tournament.
