Hypnotism for Healing
Overview
Hypnosis is a trance-like state where a person is said to become more aware, focused and open to suggestion. Hypnosis has been used for decades to help people quit addictive habits and overcome phobias. The medical community is slowly embracing the idea that hypnosis can engage the power of the mind to help the body where healing is concerned. In fact, in 2003 the "Harvard Gazette" published the results of a Harvard Medical School study showing that those patients treated with hypnosis in addition to traditional care healed faster than those who were not hypnotized.
Step 1
Have the person sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Being comfortable is the first step to being relaxed, a key emotion essential in successful hypnosis.
Step 2
Speak to the person in a low and soothing voice to encourage him to feel safe and comfortable with what you have to say.
Step 3
Request the person begin close their eyes while taking deep breaths. Ask him to concentrate on a growing feeling of relaxation that naturally accompanies deep breathing.
Step 4
Focus the person's awareness on various parts of their body, requesting that he relax his arms, then his fingers, legs and so on. This assists him in concentrating on different body parts and the comfort he feels with each of them. This process helps people forget about other things that may be on his mind so he becomes receptive to new information.
Step 5
Offer suggestions that are customized to different stages of healing. Focus on concepts such as decreased inflammation, minimized scar tissue and faster wound healing.
Step 6
Emerge the person into hypnosis by telling him you are going to count to five. When you reach five, tell him his eyes will open and he will feel relaxed. Count slowly with your voice getting less soothing and more awake with each number.
Tips and Warnings
- It is critical that your voice remain soft yet positive throughout the hypnosis session. This tone of voice encourages the person to relax and feel comfortable with you. Suggestions might include using positive reinforcement comments like "good job" or "you're doing great."
- Lengths of hypnosis can vary from person to person. Some can achieve this relaxed state in a matter of seconds, while others can take as long as a half hour. For those that take longer, you may have to repeat parts of the procedure.
