Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial and antiviral properties that make it a healing oil. The oil is taken from the eucalyptus tree to make the essential oil of eucalyptus. Use eucalyptus oil in a spray, in a bath or in massage oils or creams to obtain its healing benefits. Speak to a certified aroma therapist on the best ways to use essential oils, and consult your physician before using eucalyptus for any health conditions.

Wound Care

The antibacterial and antiseptic properties of eucalyptus make it suitable for treating wounds, cuts, burns and blisters. In her book, "The Essential Natural Health Bible," Nerys Purchon explains that eucalyptus inhibits bacteria from growing on wounds and alleviates pain associated with wounds. The University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, explains that laboratory experiments have displayed the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of eucalyptus oil.

Muscle Soreness Relief

Eucalyptus oil relieves sore muscles, aches and pains, explains Purchon. The best way to utilize the oil for this effect is to add eucalyptus to a bath and soak in the bath or massage the oil into your muscles in a blend with a carrier oil.

Eases Respiratory Symptoms

Eucalyptus eases symptoms associated with respiratory illnesses. It acts as an expectorant, clearing out mucus associated with the flu, bronchitis and sinusitis. The UMMC notes that eucalyptus is currently used in over-the-counter medicines such as throat lozenges and vapor rubs.

Other Benefits

Eucalyptus oil may be used for many other purposes. It may repel bugs and treat lice infestation; when sprayed in the air, it may inhibit diseases from spreading; and it may help you concentrate when you smell it, says Purchon. The UMMC says it may have benefits for people with diabetes, although these claims have not been supported, and more research is needed in this area.
