Your doctor may have prescribed an Ace bandage, also known as an elastic bandage, which is available at any drugstore. She may not have, however, told you how to use the Ace bandage for your specific injury. To avoid wrapping your injury incorrectly, contact your doctor if you are unsure. Otherwise, wrap your leg in an Ace bandage starting at the ankle, extending up to the knee.
Step 1
Wash and dry your leg. This will ensure the bandage stays clean and it sanitizes any cuts or scrapes that will be underneath the bandage.
Step 2
Wrap the bandage loosely around your foot twice, overlapping slightly with each layer. Pull the bandage so it is snug, but so tight that it is uncomfortable.
Step 3
Leave your heel exposed, then wrap the bandage in a crisscross over the foot and past the ankle, then back around to the front and over the other side of your ankle, then back around again. As you bring the bandage up toward the leg again, continue around the leg at the ankle. Bandage up the leg, overlapping with each layer.
Step 4
Hold the edge of the bandage taught with your hand, but not too tightly. A bandage that is too tight can cut off circulation in the leg.
Step 5
Gently fasten the metal clip that comes with the Ace bandage. Press the clip into the bandage to hold it in place, taking care not to pierce your skin.
Tips and Warnings
- Ace bandages can be purchased in large and small sizes.
- Consult a doctor before putting pressure on your leg or discontinuing the use of an Ace bandage.
