1. Tone Stomach Muscles at the Gym

You can usually find ab machines, such as an ab crunch machine, at most gyms near other weightlifting equipment. Often gyms will have more than one type of abdominal machine so that you can work different muscles in your abs. Abdominal machines are a great too for everyone and they are great for keeping stomach muscles toned and strong.

2. The Skinny on Ab Machines

Abdominal machines won't make you skinny. They do, however, help you to build muscle, which burns more calories than fat. If you want to lose weight, you will need to burn more calories than you consume in a day.

3. Ab Machines and Infomercials

You see abdominal machines advertised on television all of the time and you have to wonder if they work. Generally, if you can feel the tension in your stomach muscles while using them, then they do work for building and toning stomach muscles. Some for-sale ab machines that involve more movement, such as twisting the core, may also add to promoting weight loss because they involve more movement, however, be careful when selecting a twisting ab machine. Make sure it is well designed and that it will not twist your torso too far or in an awkward direction, as this can really mess up your back.

4. Low-tech Abdominal Machines

One of the best ways to work ab muscles is with a stability ball or a medicine ball. These are low-tech devices, or manual ab machines, in a sense, but they are just as effective as many mechanical abdominal machines. You will find stability balls at most gyms, and most department and sports stores also carry them. There are many resources for stability ball exercises, including guided classes, exercise videos and downloadable exercise charts.

5. Balance is the Key to Fitness

Whether you use an abdominal machine at the gym or buy one to use in your home, keep in mind that core strength training is one part of a complete fitness program. You don't necessarily need any type of equipment to exercise your ab muscles. You can do crunches and sit ups on a mat instead. However, the benefit of some abdominal machines, especially those found at the gym, is that you can add weight to the machine. To get results you don't need to perform a lot of repetitions, and you don't need to exercise abs every day. In fact, too much ab work can cause hypertrophy. Keep your workout balanced.
