Calories From Running and Walking

Many factors influence how many calories you burn during a walk or a run, including your age, efficiency, size and intensity level. Understanding how many calories you burn during a walk or a run can help you determine how much you can eat in a day to maintain your weight or to lose weight.

Calories Burned Walking

Walking burns 183 calories per hour for a 160-lb. person going 2 mph -- a pace equivalent to a leisurely stroll. A brisk walk of 3.5 mph burns 277 calories per hour for the same-size person. On an incline you will burn even more calories.

Calories Burned Running

Running burns more calories because it is a higher-impact activity and requires more energy to propel your body. Jogging at 5 mph burns 584 calories for a 160-lb. person going for an hour. Running at an 8 mph pace -- 7 1/2-minutes a mile -- burns 986 calories per hour.

Considerations

Even if you aspire to run, start with a walking program that eases your body into the impact of running to help prevent injury, suggests the American Council on Exercise.
