Foods for Healing GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is a chronic condition characterized by an intense burning sensation in the throat and chest, particularly after you eat. This condition occurs when hydrochloric acid and other stomach acids move from the digestive system into the esophagus. This results in the irritation of your esophagus. Although no cure exists for GERD, certain foods may reduce the symptoms of this condition, and may allow your esophagus to heal.

Talk to your physician before changing your diet to heal GERD. Gastroesophageal reflux disease requires medical attention and supervision.

Potato Juice

Raw potato juice may help ease the symptoms of GERD, particularly when taken with meals, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." It may also help heal the lining of your esophagus. Leave the peel on the potatoes for juicing -- the peels contain nutrients essential for the healing of the esophageal lining.

Papaya

Papaya contains digestive enzymes that may help your stomach break down foods and assimilate nutrients more efficiently, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." This may help reduce the production of hydrochloric acid in your stomach, which can minimize the occurrence of GERD flareups. Reducing acids that can leak into your esophagus may allow your body to naturally heal your esophageal lining.

Raw Vegetables

Raw vegetables may decrease the frequency and severity of GERD flareups, helping you body heal your esophagus, according to the Balches. These foods are abundant sources of dietary fiber, which help absorb stomach acids. Because fiber is not readily digested by your body, it passes through your intestines and is eliminated from your body.
