Popcorn is a light, fluffy and crunchy snack food made from a variant of corn. When cooked with hot air, the starch within the corn kernels liquefies then bursts out from the shell to solidify, forming the popcorn.

Contents

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a 1-cup serving of air popped popcorn, without butter or oil, weighs just 8 g. A little over 6 g of that amount is carbohydrate, 1 g is protein, and less than 1 g is fat within the serving.

Caloric Value

The USDA also states that a 1-cup serving of popcorn prepared with hot air contains 31 total calories. Carbohydrates offers 24 of those calories, while proteins provide 4 more calories and fats deliver 3 calories.

Total Caloric Intake

A single 1-cup serving of air popped popcorn offers just under 2 percent of the total daily recommended intake of calories for the average adult, based on a diet of 2000 calories per day.

Vitamins

Certain vitamins are also available within a serving of air popped popcorn, including thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6 and folate. The snack food also contains dietary minerals, such as iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese.
