Daily calorie requirements for males are based on a formula that calculates your height, weight and age. Since men typically have less body fat and more muscle than women of the same age and weight, they burn more calories.
Body Mass Index
Body mass index calculates the percentage of body fat you have based on your weight and height. The amount of calories a male requires will depend on whether his weight is normal or if he needs to gain or lose weight.
Basal Metabolic Rate
Basal metabolic rate estimates the number of calories you burn when at rest. For a male, the formula is 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year ) = BMR.
Harris Benedict Equation
The Harris Benedict equation multiplies your BMR by your activity level. This number indicates how many calories you need each day to maintain your current weight. Multiply your BMR by 1.2 if you are sedentary. Multiply your BMR by 1.375 if you exercise one to three days a week or 1.725 if you exercise six to seven days a week.
