Celestone, or betamethasone, is a corticosteroid used to treat allergic conditions, ulcerative colitis, lupus, arthritis, psoriasis and some breathing disorders. The medication works by preventing the release of substances inside the body that trigger inflammation. Celestone may cause serious side effects when taken long-term, and the drug is only available by prescription.
Step 1
Take Celestone as instructed by your doctor. Do not attempt to raise or lower your dosage without your doctor's permission. If you believe your dose requires adjustment, call your doctor for advice.
Step 2
Use a dose measuring cup or spoon when taking liquid Celestone. Do not use a regular table spoon, as doing so does not guarantee the proper amount of medication. If a measuring cup was not included with your prescription, ask your pharmacist for one.
Step 3
Carry a medical ID card with you at all times when taking Celestone. The use of steroid medications may alter your treatment plan for other conditions, and steroid use can complicate surgery.
Step 4
Avoid exposure to bacteria, viruses and any other contagions while taking Celestone. Because Celestone is a steroid, it can significantly weaken your immune system and make it difficult for your body to fight off infections.
Step 5
Tell your health care provide you are taking Celestone before receiving any live vaccines. You may need to wait until you discontinue Celestone before being vaccinated.
Step 6
Watch for symptoms of overdose, such as thinning skin, increased facial hair or acne, impotence, easy bruising, menstrual changes or loss of libido. These symptoms generally result from prolonged use of high doses. A single high dose of Celestone does not typically cause serious or life-threatening symptoms, according to the Drugs.com.
Step 7
Tell your doctor if you experience any serious side effects while taking Celestone, such as shortness of breath, vision changes, swelling, severe depression, coughing up blood, tarry or bloody stools, severe stomach pain, vomiting, accelerated heart beat, excessive thirst, muscle weakness, buzzing or ringing in your ears or seizures.
Step 8
Seek emergency medical attention if you develop symptoms of an allergic reaction. Hives, breathing difficulty, and mouth or facial swelling are signs of a serious allergic reaction to this medication.
Step 9
Store Celestone away from heat and moisture, at room temperature, in a tightly sealed container. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
Tips and Warnings
- Discontinue Celestone gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Do not use Celestone if you have an allergy to betamethasone or a fungal infection. Avoid drinking alcohol while using Celestone.
