1. You Make me Feel so Young
A brow lift can, as the name suggests, raise eyebrows that sag as a result of age and gravity, giving the patient a more energized, younger look. Your plastic surgeon can use one of three techniques to take years off of your appearance. With a coronal lift, your surgeon cuts across the middle of the scalp from ear to ear, removes a portion of the scalp, then stitches the skin back together. In a subcutaneous brow lift, your surgeon makes an incision at the hairline. He removes excess skin and rejoins your scalp to avoid moving the hairline further back on your head. In an endoscopic brow lift, a small instrument accesses your facial muscles through small incisions just behind the hairline. Your plastic surgeon can then manipulate those muscles, or even remove some, to gain the desired results of your brow lift. He lifts excess skin back onto the scalp, but doesn't remove it. Screws hold the relocated skin in place, which eventually absorb into your body.
2. Choosing a Surgeon
You should feel comfortable enough with your surgeon to ask any questions you have about the procedure and the surgeon's experience. Take the time to research surgeons and insist upon certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You can also ask to see before and after photos of previous brow lifts performed by a surgeon or get recommendations from someone you trust who feels happy with their results.
3. Dollars and Sense
Keep in mind that insurance may not cover the brow lift itself or any complications you may experience as a result of the surgery. Before you commit, be sure you have the time and finances to afford a brow lift. Check with your surgeon regarding costs and plan at least two weeks for your recovery. The only thing that may hold you back from your everyday life is your appearance. Expect facial bruising as a result of a brow lift, but remember that after a couple of weeks, you can cover most of the residual effects of the surgery with makeup.
4. Unusual Symptoms
If you go home after your brow lift and notice anything out of the ordinary, such as chest pains, an irregular heart beat or you feel short of breath, you need to see a physician immediately. These could be reactions to medication, anesthesia used during your procedure or even complications from the surgery, so get any unusual symptoms checked.
5. Expect Some Discomfort
Occasionally, nerve damage can occur after a brow lift. Damage to the nerves causes an inability to arch your eyebrows, but your surgeon can usually fix any damage with corrective surgery. Sometimes hair falls out along the incision of the brow lift, but the hair usually grows back. You may experience numbness or itching along the incision line, but both should dissipate after a few weeks.
