How Many Calories Do I Use When I Sleep?

Your body still is active while you sleep, burning calories throughout the night. People with high metabolisms burn more calories while asleep, as their bodies stay in high gear.

100-Pound Person

The number of calories burned depends largely on weight. A 100-pound person burns 252 calories if she sleeps six hours, 336 calories in eight hours and 420 calories for 10 hours.

175-Pound Person

As your weight goes up, so does the number of calories burned while sleeping. For a 175-pound person, 441 calories are burned in six hours of sleep, 588 calories in eight hours and 735 calories in 10 hours.

250-Pound Person

A person who weighs 250 pounds can burn significant calories while sleeping. In six hours, he burns 630 calories. He burns 840 calories in eight hours and 1,050 for 10 hours.

Additional Factors

Eat small meals every three to four hours throughout the day to keep your metabolism churning at a high rate. If you pace your meals and avoid going to bed hungry, your metabolism will keep working as you sleep. Regular exercise, including both cardiovascular and resistance training, helps burn calories. A high ratio of muscle to fat, achieved through resistance training, allows your body to burn more calories throughout the day, including while you sleep.
