You may be suffering from a low sperm count if you have been attempting to conceive a baby to no avail, have found it difficult to get or maintain an erection or experience problems with ejaculation. To determine your sperm count, a sperm analysis is needed. If low, you will be diagnosed with a condition called oligospermia. Many treatment options are available, some of which are natural. Although many natural treatments are effective, you should speak to your doctor about medical treatment options if your condition does not improve.
How to Increase Sperm Naturally
Step 1
Drop bad habits. If you dabble in recreational drugs, you may want to reconsider. According to Dr. Michael A. Werner, marijuana causes a decrease in sperm count, as does cocaine. Dr. Werner states that even infrequent cocaine use can have lasting effects. The drug could be detected in the semen samples of patients who had used two years prior to giving the sample.
Step 2
Moderate your exercise. Exercise can help increase your sperm count; however, excessive exercise can be detrimental. According to Dr. Werner, men who participated in long-distance runs of more than 100 miles per week, or cycled in excess of 50 miles a week, experienced a decrease in sperm count. Participating in brisk walking for 30 to 60 minutes a day, four to five days a week, is beneficial and safe.
Step 3
Reduce ejaculations. Some men have no problem with ejaculating, and this could be part of the problem. Your sperm need time to build back up in numbers after each ejaculation. Therefore, you should refrain from sexual intercourse and masturbation for a period of three days after each ejaculation.
Step 4
Turn down the heat. When your testicles are too hot, your sperm count decreases. To change this and increase your sperm count, wear looser clothing; instead of tight-fitting briefs, wear boxers. You also need to avoid hot tubs and saunas and take showers rather than hot baths. When you finish your shower, place a cool cloth on your testicles; this stimulates the circulation in your testicles, increasing your sperm count.
Step 5
Quit smoking. According to Dr. Werner, smoking cigarettes causes your sperm count to decrease by as much as 23 percent while decreasing your motility by as much as 13 percent. To help increase both sperm count and motility, decrease the number of cigarettes you smoke until the number you light is zero.
