The body burns alcohol for fuel before it burns fat, so consider the calorie content in a glass of whiskey before taking a swig. Many people enjoy the pleasing aroma and layers of flavor from different types of whiskies.

Serving Size

A jigger is 1.5 ounces of whiskey and contains about 100 calories. Usually, a glass contains some ice cubes and two jiggers, which would amount to about 200 calories.

Types

There are different types of whiskeys, usually made from wheat corn or malted barley and rye. The CSU Health Network, provided by the Colorado State University, suggests that the calorie content could bump up from 100 to 125 calories per 1.5 ounce when you choose to drink a malted whiskey.

Considerations

Whiskey contains about 7 calories per gram. This is almost twice the 4 calories per gram that protein and carbohydrates have.

Fifth of Whiskey

The popular drink term, "a fifth" of whiskey is about 25 ounces, which is equivalent to 17 standard drinks according to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. That would be 1700 calories in a glass of whiskey, so that could eat up all --- or most --- of your maximum calorie intake per day.
